Growing Conditions

Cool-season crop; best growth at ~15–26°C (60–80°F). In Florida and much of Korea it is grown as an annual winter/spring plasticulture crop.

Irrigation

Shallow-rooted and drip-irrigated; needs frequent, light watering and never waterlogging. Overhead water is sometimes used only for frost protection and establishment.

Water Quality

Fairly salt-SENSITIVE — yield can decline from around EC ~1.0–1.5 dS/m, lower than most vegetables. Low-salinity, low-chloride water is important.

Soil

Well-drained sandy loam, high in organic matter, pH 5.5–6.5. Raised beds improve drainage and root health.

Fertilization

Feed steadily through fertigation based on tissue and soil tests; avoid excess nitrogen, which produces soft fruit and excess runners.

Pest & Disease

Key pests: two-spotted spider mites and thrips. Key diseases: gray mold (Botrytis), anthracnose, and powdery mildew. Airflow and careful irrigation timing reduce fruit rot.
